What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems therapy is based on the understanding that the mind naturally contains many different "parts" or sub-personalities. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS recognizes that these parts—which might manifest as inner critics, protectors, wounded aspects, or other internal voices—all serve important functions in our psychological system.

Rather than pathologizing these parts, IFS therapy helps you:

  • Identify and understand the roles of different parts within your internal system

  • Develop a relationship with parts from a place of curiosity and compassion

  • Access your core "Self"—the natural state of calm, clarity, and compassion that exists within everyone

  • Facilitate healing for wounded or burdened parts through Self-leadership

  • Create greater internal harmony and integration

My Approach to IFS Therapy

In sessions we'll work collaboratively to:

  • Create safety and establish a therapeutic relationship

  • Help you identify and get to know your different parts

  • Support you in accessing your Self energy

  • Facilitate healing dialogues between Self and parts

  • Witness the unburdening process as parts release outdated beliefs and painful emotions

  • Support integration of these changes into your daily life

We may even blend IFS practice with additional supportive modalities to meet your unique needs and goals.

What to Expect in a Session

IFS sessions typically last 45-60 minutes and take place in-person or via telehealth. The therapy process is collaborative, compassionate, and often deeply moving.

To start and resource you, we will:

  • Discuss your history and goals

  • Introduce the IFS model and language

  • Begin identifying key parts in your system

  • Start developing your relationship with Self energy
